Broadcast Audio Upgrade Debrief by The Penn Group
We recently had the privilege of partnering with One Church in Gahanna, Ohio to elevate their broadcast audio experience. The goal was to improve clarity, control, and overall sound quality both in-room and for live broadcast streams — creating an environment where every spoken word and musical moment resonates with impact.
Scope of Work
• Installed comprehensive acoustic room treatment to control reflections, reduce flutter echo, and provide a more balanced listening environment throughout the sanctuary and broadcast mix position.
• Integrated a new Allen & Heath Avantis digital mixing console, providing flexible routing, intuitive control surfaces, and powerful DSP capabilities for live services and broadcast feeds.
• Deployed an all-new JBL Professional studio monitor setup — purpose-built for accurate mix reference and dependable reproduction in the broadcast/control room.
• Designed and implemented a full Dante audio network, seamlessly integrating the new audio gear with the existing one-church broadcast suite and enabling high-quality, low-latency audio distribution across systems.
Execution
Throughout the project, our team coordinated closely with church leadership and AV volunteers to ensure minimal disruption to regular services and live streams. The upgrade was carefully staged to maintain continuity of worship programming, and all components were rigorously tested prior to final commissioning.
Acoustic treatment panels were strategically placed to address key reflection points. The Avantis console was configured with custom scenes and layer layouts to streamline volunteer operation. JBL studio monitors were acoustically positioned in the broadcast room for accurate nearfield monitoring, helping sound operators make confident mix decisions.
The Dante network tied everything together — enabling reliable audio transport between stage inputs, house PA, broadcast room, and recording interfaces on a single, unified network backbone.
Outcome
The upgrade dramatically improved audio clarity, consistency, and control across both live and broadcast environments:
• Congregational engagement increased as spoken word intelligibility and music fidelity became clearer and more natural.
• Operators now enjoy a smooth, intuitive workflow with the Avantis, reducing setup time and making sound checks faster and more efficient.
• The new studio monitors provide a true representation of the broadcast mix, helping to ensure what’s heard live is exactly what goes out over the stream.
• Dante networking has eliminated analog clutter and improved routing flexibility — enabling future expansion with ease.
